About unit pricing
Struggling to figure out which product is a better deal when the sizes and units do not match? Unit pricing is here to help.
A unit price is the price per unit of measurement of a product, such as “$X per litre” or “$Y per kilogram”. The display of unit pricing according to standard units, alongside the selling price, is intended to help consumers compare the prices of products easily across different brands and package sizes so as to make better informed purchasing decisions.
The standard units of measurement used for unit pricing may be by weight, volume, or number, for example:
Weight – Eggs: price per 100g
Volume – Cooking Oils: price per 100ml
Quantity – Leafy vegetables: price per item
Expansion of unit pricing pilot in supermarkets
The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (“CCS”) and the Consumers Association of Singapore (“CASE”) are piloting unit pricing in major supermarkets in Singapore to test the viability and usefulness of making such information available to grocery shoppers.
Stage 1
The Stage 1 pilot, which took place between September and December 2025, saw CCS and CASE partner NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Prime Supermarket, Cold Storage and Giant to display unit prices for selected grocery categories at participating outlets. Consumer feedback was encouraging, with shoppers finding unit pricing useful for comparing prices across different brands and packaging sizes.
Stage 2 - Current
In Stage 2, the pilot will be expanded to cover a wider range of commonly purchased grocery items. New partners, Don Don Donki and RedMart, will also be joining the original operators for the pilot, with each operator participating for eight weeks[1]. In addition, the pilot will extend to online stores for the first time. Sheng Siong and RedMart will display unit pricing for selected grocery categories on their online stores from 1 October 2026, with other operators rolling out progressively on their respective platforms.
