CCCS and AsLEA collaborate on ASEAN competition policy and law

The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Asian Law and Economics Association (AsLEA) on 24 June 2019. The two-year MoU marks CCCS’s role as a supporting organisation for the 2019 and 2020 AsLEA Conferences with the aim of stimulating research on competition policy and law in ASEAN.

In collaboration with AsLEA, CCCS organised a plenary session “Perspectives on Competition Issues in the New Economy” during the 15^th AsLEA Annual Conference “Law and Economics in a Disruptive World” which was held on 28 June 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. At the plenary session, representatives from several competition authorities in ASEAN shared their agency experiences on how the dynamics of competition have been altered in the new economy, as well as how authorities have responded to competition cases in the new economy. The session also discussed actual competition cases handled by the authorities in the region.

In addition, academics and researchers were invited to submit research papers/articles on competition issues in ASEAN, which were presented at a breakout session during the Conference. Numerous submissions were received, and the papers selected for presentation included topics relating to cross-border competition enforcement, harmonization of competition laws in ASEAN, competition and innovation, as well as leniency. The breakout session was moderated by Dr. Tan Hi Lin, Director, Policy and Markets Division, CCCS.
