The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (“CCS”) has investigated businesses for procuring fake online reviews.
Fake reviews can mislead consumers by creating a false impression of a business’s reputation and the experiences of its customers. CCS will take appropriate enforcement action where businesses engage in unfair practices involving fake reviews.
Involved in fake reviews? Come forward to CCS
CCS calls on businesses and providers of fake-review services that have been involved in procuring, providing or posting fake online reviews to come forward voluntarily.
If you come forward and cooperate with CCS before CCS commences formal investigations against you, CCS will take your cooperation into account favourably.
The appropriate enforcement action will depend on the facts and circumstances of each case. Relevant considerations include:
· the nature and extent of the conduct;
· the business’s level of involvement;
· its cooperation with CCS; and
· the steps taken to cease and remedy the conduct.
